America Remains Strong
The Immediate Reaction at Home
A massive rescue operation was immediately initiated. White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten chaired a transient domestic consequences group to compensate for bereaved families.† US airspace reopened on September 13, with tighter security.† Later that day, President Bush pledged $40 billion for the recovery process.† Four days later, US markets reopened and Manhattan resumed normal operations.†
A More Secure Nation
Over the months following 9/11, 768 "special interest" detainees were arrested.† Attorney General John Ashcroft stated that the US would take any steps necessary under the US constitution to deter future attacks. US airspace became more secure as new security regulations were implemented.†
Airport security was at its peak over the days following 9/11.
